It is good not to underestimate thermal insulation

The purpose of thermal insulation is relatively simple. Prevent heat leakage from the house and thus prevent unnecessary waste of energy for heating the building. And now it's not just that heating costs money, environmental friendliness also plays an important role in this equation. The less we heat our houses, the less energy we use and the less we burden nature. And of course, in the case of quality insulation, you will save a lot of money.

That is why it does not pay to save on insulation and we definitely recommend making it from quality materials and experienced experts. Just experienced builders can look after the perfect installation of thermal insulation. If it is not perfect, there will be heat loss and the overall energy savings will not be as good as they could be.

Thermal insulation is most observed in low-energy building or passive house projects. If you are going to build these projects, proper planning, purchase of materials and execution is an absolute necessity.

What properties of thermal insulation to monitor?

Just like masonry materials you choose according to different properties, this is also the case with thermal insulation. For example, you will be interested in thermal conductivity, so-called lambda. It indicates the ability of the material to transfer heat and you want to buy thermal insulation with the lowest possible lambda number.

You will probably also be interested in the ability to absorb noise. In this case, it is divided into two camps - structural and spatial. Structural noise (also impact noise) is created by a mechanical impulse and causes vibrations across the material. For example, when someone in the room above you stomps or something falls to the ground. There are spaces where absolute peace is required, and therefore it is necessary to obtain thermal insulation that has excellent structural noise attenuation.

You may also be interested in how thermal insulation can absorb room noise. This is especially important if, for example, you are building a building in the city that will carry loud traffic (such as production). Then it is necessary that the building meets the given noise limits and at night does not disturb the sleeping inhabitants of a nearby housing estate, for example.

We also recommend monitoring the fire resistance of thermal insulation (there are also completely non-flammable ones) and if it is important for you to protect the environment, look for thermal insulation produced ecologically and those that are not harmful to health. These characteristics should be evidenced by certificates issued by independent institutions.

Types of thermal insulation

The main types of thermal insulation can be divided according to the material from which it is made - foam, mineral and natural.

Foam insulation includes mainly polyurethane foam, plinth boards or boards made of extruded polystyrene and others. By far the most widely used mineral fibers are glass wool, which has exceptional thermal insulation properties, excellent water vapor permeability and excellent sound absorption. Purely natural thermal insulation includes, for example, wood fiber, sheep wool or hemp.
