Power connectors

Power connectors and connection ports in electronic devices are an indispensable element for powering, expanding and connecting additional external equipment. They also enable the connection of additional memory cards, peripherals, optical drives, external memory drives and graphics cards to computer motherboards and industrial electronic devices. Without the plethora of power connectors and adapters found in today's computers, it would be impossible for them to function optimally.

Power connectors - connection standards

Stable supply of electronic devices is the basic task of transformer devices connected to the electric network. The supplied energy with the right parameters enables the work of computer motherboards, processors, memory cards and hard drives. Power supplies for stationary devices are in the form of small boxes with the necessary equipment contained in them, as well as outgoing cable harnesses and various types of power connectors.

Despite numerous attempts by various companies to introduce standardized connection systems, connectors supplying individual components of computer systems and electronic devices still exist in many types and types. With the advancement of time and the development of technology, they miniaturize and provide more durable and reliable power supply and, in some cases, data transmission between devices. An example of the two most common power systems is the ATX power supply connector and the Molex connector. Depending on the type and age of the devices, they are used to power fans, graphics cards or memory cards in electronic equipment.

  • ATX power supply connector - is the most commonly used type of connection between a power module and a device. The ATX system also concerns the arrangement of individual elements on the motherboard and their integrated structure. ATX power supplies have the highest power ranging from 300W to 1600W. The ATX power supply connector comes in 4-pin, 20-pin and 24-pin versions and are sometimes connected together. Part of the 24-pin connectors consists of two connection modules.

  • SFX power supplies - they are slightly smaller power devices. Designed for cooperation in low housings and places where it is important to keep smaller dimensions.

  • TFX computer power supplies - it is the smallest power supply and it can be used in very flat housings. Typical dimensions of this type of power supply are 17.5 cm x 8.5 cm x 6.5 cm.

Molex connector - the older type of connections

The Molex connector is the colloquial name borrowed from the manufacturer of these devices, Molex, which introduced this connection standard in the early 1980s. It gained popularity and is now used to connect various types of computer hardware. Molex standard plugs are available in two versions as standard and mini 4-pin plugs. They are made of plastic in a row arrangement of contacts. The maximum permissible value of the operating current that the Molex connector has is from 5 to 8.5A. The design of the plug is protected by a special cut against accidental reverse connection with the sockets.

S-ATA-SATA power connector - universal connections

A S-ATA-SATA power connector was created following the improvement and consolidation of computer equipment connections. It allows you to connect and power, inter alia, hard drives and optical drives of data carriers. The standard of the ATA series has a flat plug and 15 connection contacts. It carries three power supplies of 3.3V, 5V and 12V DC. Repair elements are available with an S-ATA-SATA power connector and sections of several centimeters long for soldering into the repaired elements. The S-ATA SATA power connector together with a 4-pin Molex plug enables the creation of a connection cable between two systems of computer connectors.

PCIe slot

Most types of computer power supplies and standalone electronic equipment have a PCIe connector. It is mainly used to power various types of graphics cards connected to motherboards in computers. The range of power transmitted with this type of power connector is typically up to 75 watts. The PCIe connector has 6 or 8 power pins. In older 6-pin versions, it was intended for PCI Express graphics cards. Both systems are compatible regardless of the number of pins, and the connectors are also available in a split 6 + 8 pin version, which allows you to power PCI Express graphics cards regardless of the type of slot. This system enables powering devices with high energy demand.
