Overhead Line Fittings

Overhead power lines are used to transmit electric energy. Depending on their function in the energy supply and distribution process, a distinction is made between transmission, transmission-distribution, distribution and direct power supply lines for residential and industrial customers.

Each overhead line consists of supporting structures (poles), insulators (elements that do not conduct electricity), phase and lightning conductors, and line equipment. The conductors are attached to the support structures by insulators and fittings, and their function is to conduct electricity. Lightning conductors provide protection against lightning discharges.

Overhead line fittings - electrical connections between insulated conductors

Fittings used on high voltage, medium voltage and low voltage overhead lines include components for insulator attachment, arc protection and to provide electrical connections between insulated conductors. The fittings enable installation of wires on poles and their proper and safe operation.

Overhead line conductors

Overhead line cables are usually made of aluminium or aluminium alloys. They are stranded from many aluminium wires, and in the case of large cross-sections, aluminium or steel wire reinforcement is used in the middle. Copper wires, although they are characterized by better conductivity than aluminum, are not used in overhead lines mainly due to their higher price, as well as greater weight.

Insulators for overhead lines

Aluminium overhead lines are attached to the supporting structures by means of insulators, which have two main tasks:

  • electrical separation of live conductors from conductive parts of support structures,

  • maintaining the weight of conductors.

Insulators are made of porcelain or glass and sometimes composite materials (mainly silicone elastomer). Insulators are divided into line supports, standing supports and hanging supports (caps or trunks) according to their function in the lines.

Fastening, protecting and connection accessories for overhead lines

Overhead line fittings consist of elements that protect insulators against the effects of an electric arc, i.e. protective cones and rings, as well as electrical fastenings and connections: shafts, hangers, hanger brackets, and terminals and connectors.

Insulator shafts and hangers

The shafts and hangers are used to mount the insulators on the supporting structures. Hangers are attached to the cross-bars of poles and on them, using special holders, hanging insulators are hung. The shafts are used for mounting the standing insulators. The shaft should be wrapped with strips of hemp saturated with mine and varnish or with specially designed for this purpose putty. The insulator is screwed onto the shaft prepared in this way. As the standing insulators are fastened in different ways, there are commercially available straight, bowed or hooked shanks compatible with them.

Terminals and joints for overhead lines

Clamps and connectors are used to connect the conductors of overhead lines. The purpose of terminals is to conduct electricity, while connectors are also used to transmit tension.

Connectors used in overhead lines can be divided into

  • crimped,

  • pressed,

  • screwed,

  • automatic.

Sintered connectors are characterized by quite poor current conductivity and low tensile strength. Better parameters are obtained here by more resistant and well conductive pressed connectors. Screw terminal blocks are used to connect wires of different diameters or to close loops on standing insulators.

Self-acting connectors are also available on the market, which are characterized by the best performance (conductivity and strength). They are simple in construction, easy to use and quick to install. Self-acting couplings consist of two parts separated by a partition. In each of them there are self-locking jaws, which create an electrical connection by clamping on the wire.
