Adjustable Wrenches

Adjustable wrenches are a variety of 1-sided open-end wrenches with movable, adjustable jaws. These tools were developed as a result of the need to handle a large number of threaded connections of different sizes. Like open-end wrenches, they are mainly intended for tightening or loosening bolted connections of a large size and strength range. They can be used for hexagonal bolts and hexagonal nuts. Their version with a reversible jaw allows you to clamp or hold pipes.

Adjustable wrench design

Each adjustable wrench consists of a handle connected to a fixed jaw, which is the homogeneous material of its main part. The movable jaw is mounted to the main part and a simple mechanism to move it, whose main element is a worm screw. In professional adjustable wrenches, a measuring scale is provided on the fixed jaw for quick presetting of jaw opening. The quick movement of the movable jaw is facilitated by thick notches on the worm screw which reduce finger slippage when changing the span of the wrench. In addition, the thin profile of the jaws makes it easier to operate a professional adjustable wrench in confined spaces. In professional adjustable wrenches, the opposite edges of the jaws are parallel to each other and angled away from the handle axis by 15°. This design guarantees a secure grip and makes it easier to work in tight spaces. Adjustable wrenches usually have a wide opening to make it easier to operate the jaw opening adjustment mechanism, as well as a "leading" groove to it, recognizable by touch even by gloved hands. This allows the fingers to quickly hit the jaw opening adjustment mechanism without having to visually check this action.

There are two types of adjustable wrench handles: traditional forged steel handles and plastic (elastomer) handles. Steel handles are finished by oxidation, chromium plating or phosphating. In adjustable wrenches of newer construction, the plastic-covered handle makes it easier to hold and operate with the hand, and it does not cool down unpleasantly for the hand when working at low temperatures. Adjustable wrenches are made of alloy steel in accordance with standards: ISO 6787, DIN 3117, ASME B107.8M - 1996 and BS 6333.The adjustable wrenches will handle threaded connections with hex drive sizes up to 56 mm.

Types of adjustable wrenches

Adjustable wrenches are classified according to whether the handle is traditional (steel handle) or ergonomic (elastomer-coated handle). They can also be classified according to the reversibility of the movable jaw into wrenches with non-reversible movable jaw or reversible jaw. Wrenches of the second type by reversing the movable jaw allow, for example, the jamming of pipes and have an extended range of use.

Main characteristics of adjustable wrenches

The technical parameters that characterize adjustable wrenches are: maximum size (maximum jaw width, mm), total length (mm), thickness of working head (mm), height of working head and total weight (g).

Applications for adjustable wrenches

Adjustable wrenches can be used wherever open-end wrenches are used. However, due to the limited application of very high torques and the fact that they are larger than open-ended or combination wrenches, their real range of application is much smaller. An exception to this are wrenches with reversible jaws, whose range of applications has been extended to include operations for gripping pipes or dismantling rounded nuts and bolt heads. Adjustable wrenches are manufactured by Bahco, Beta, Facom, Gedore, Hazet, Proxxon, Snap-on, Stanley, Stahlwille, Wera etc.
