What is a rough construction?

It is almost surprising that such a widespread construction term "rough construction" is not defined in any way in laws, standards or project documentation. In general, however, we could say that the most common interpretation speaks of a rough structure as an unfinished structure that does not have superimposed surfaces on it. It is a building that does not flow into and is stable. Very often it is also discussed whether the rough construction includes the filling of openings (windows, doors) or not.

If we were to define more precisely the scope of work that qualifies the construction as "rough", it is mainly the completion of earthworks, foundations, horizontal and vertical structures, insulation against moisture, water and gases. It can also be the completion of thermal insulation, locksmith and carpentry work (if they are load-bearing) or, for example, plumbing structures.

Facade systems for rough construction

Thanks to the façade systems, you can be sure that the overall façade of the building will fit together well and provide the building with all the properties specified by the manufacturer over its entire surface. There are countless solutions on the market, from façade slats through design profiles to façade cassettes.

When choosing a façade system, think about exactly what you want from the façade. Do you have a special look of a building in your head? Or are you primarily interested in the features that the facade will lend to the building? If you are not an expert in this field, we always recommend that you consult someone. This will save you a delay or even a substantial part of your budget if you accidentally purchase an inappropriate system.

Masonry materials for rough construction

At present, the most frequently used masonry materials mainly include fired and concrete bricks, aerated concrete, fireclay masonry, lime-cement bricks, lost formwork or facing or ceramic bricks. In this category you will also find lightweight concrete blocks or sand-lime blocks. Aerated concrete blocks are gaining in popularity due to their lightness, but also good thermal and sound insulation capabilities.

Rough construction and thermal insulation

Thermal insulation is now a matter of course in most modern buildings. Its task is to prevent heat from escaping from the building and, conversely, not to let the winter in. Its role is all the more important if you are building low-energy or passive houses. And because different thermal insulation may be suitable for different parts of a rough construction, due attention must be paid to the selection.

The choice is, for example, expanded polystyrene, vacuum insulation, mineral wool, phenolic foam boards or blown insulation. Each of the materials has slightly different properties, so it is necessary to choose the insulation according to the purpose of construction.

Binders and fillers

Simply put, binders and fillers are what hold all the building components of a rough structure together and ensure its maximum usability. In this category you will find, for example, plasters and mixtures, facade plasters, construction adhesives, waterproofing, jointing compounds or sand, cement, lime or mortar. You can also choose from a menu of silicones, foams or sealants.
