Flip-up connectors

The connectors are widely used in electrical installations, allowing for permanent and safe joining of electrical wires of different cross-section parameters. They allow quick connections without using tools and can be used in installations of various specifications and purposes. They are an alternative to other connectors and, although their origin dates back to the 1950s, they are subject to continuous modernization, which allows them to be better adapted to the diverse needs of users.

Expansion Fittings - The Alternative to Bolted Connections

The split electrical connector is the successor to the oldest screw connectors. Its most important advantage is reliability and safety, as well as providing easy and quick installation without the use of tools.

Installation connector types

Connectors are components which have been used in electrical installations almost since the beginning of time. Of course, the oldest connectors were different in design and execution from those of today, but the idea was the same - to easily and permanently connect the cable ends of devices or fixtures to the power supply.

The oldest installation connectors had screw terminals, which are still successfully used today. Although the connection using screw connectors is efficient and safe, it takes a lot of time, as the owners of a small, family-owned German company Wago noticed nearly 70 years ago. As an alternative to the screw, they developed a spring-loaded connector that made connecting two wires a snap - just slide the ends of the wires into the open connector and then lower the lever. Despite the significant advantages of this type of connection over screw connections, the idea did not catch on immediately.

Today, however, Wago quick-connect couplings and expandable couplings from other manufacturers are very popular, and installers appreciate the ease with which connections are made and the much less time-consuming work. Although quick release couplings are quick to install, manufacturers have gone a step further and created push-in quick connectors, which work by applying a clamping force to the cable. The end is simply pushed into the connector and that completes the connection process. However, this type of connector is not suitable for all types of connections, so it probably won't replace expandable connectors.

How do quick-connect couplings work and what are they used for?

The purpose of an expandable coupling is very simple. They are based on a cage spring made of e.g. chromium-plated steel, which together with a galvanized copper conductor rail forms an electrical connection. Levering the connector with a finger, allows the wire to be inserted into the connector, while closing it - crimps the wire. The end of the conductor is crimped into the connector with sufficient force, which on one hand does not cause "flattening" of the conductor's copper wires, which could lead to breaking the electrical connection, and on the other hand does not allow the end of the conductor to slip out of the terminal.

Advantages of compression connectors

The split connectors are appreciated by installers not only because they make their work easier and save time. They are a universal product, which does not have to be selected with special care, paying attention to many parameters. The advantages of quick disconnect fittings include:

  • the possibility of installing single- and multi-stranded wires and cables,

  • large range of applications in terms of cross-section of conductors - the smallest permissible is usually 0.14 mm2, the largest - 6 mm2,

  • availability of versions for two-, three- and five-wire connections,

  • possibility of fast connection of high power devices,

  • safety even with long cable installations for larger cross sections.

Parameters of strippable connectors vary depending on the manufacturer, but the most typical products ensure the connection of copper wires, have a flammability class of at least V2 (according to U 94), are designed for operation in an environment with normal humidity at a temperature of 85 degrees C. The dimensions of the connectors oscillate around 2x2x1 cm, and their weight does not exceed a few grams. They are made of plastic with adequate durability.
