Triggers

Low voltage circuit breakers in electrical installations in industrial, residential and public buildings, can be equipped with electric releases . These devices operate mechanically, acting on the switch lock latch. There are thermal and magnetic releases. The latter are made of a core, an armature and a winding. Depending on how the winding is powered, we can distinguish between current and voltage releases.

Shunt release and current

The current release windings are connected to the primary circuit of the circuit breaker. When the current flowing through the trip winding exceeds the value corresponding to the inrush current of the trip unit, the armature is attracted, the latch is released and the circuit breaker is open. The over-current releases used in low-voltage circuit breakers respond to short-circuit currents (set to a multiple of the rated current of the protected receiver) and act immediately.

Current releases are also elements of primary relays - however, they do not operate mechanically, but open the electric contact that breaks the coil circuit.

The voltage releases are divided into shunt releases and undervoltage releases. Shunt releases respond to an increase in voltage (i.e. power to the trip unit), while undervoltage (undervoltage) to its loss (disconnection of the supply voltage). The adopted nomenclature is popular and widely used, although it is not reflected in the standards and is generally considered informal.

Growth trigger

When the voltage is applied, the electromagnet of the shunt switch acts directly on the switch mechanics. The shunt release is dedicated to continuous operation, so it can also be used to build electrical interlocks between power fuses. The device is also used in impulse operation, provided that additional conditions are met. The shunt release is intended for remote tripping, and its implementation is not possible with an open circuit, loose contact or a voltage drop. The device always works without delay.

Undervoltage release

When the solenoid coil is energized, the system is at rest, and the circuit breaker is triggered by the operation of the electromagnet after a voltage failure. When the trip coil is de-energized, the spring drawing the armature away from the trip unit core causes the breaker to open. This is the case when there is a power failure in the network or the coil is broken, e.g. by a thermal relay. Undervoltage releases are manufactured as instantaneous or with a time delay caused by a clock mechanism built into the lever actuated by the release armature.

The undervoltage release is designed for continuous operation and guarantees a safe blocking. For this reason, it is suitable for use in emergency shutdowns, as well as wherever, for example, breaking the continuity of the control circuit absolutely must cause the circuit breaker to trip. The release does not allow the circuit breaker to close in a voltage-free state.

Triggers for rail mounting vs. built-in

Releases, regardless of whether they respond to voltage increase or loss, are implemented by manufacturers in the form of components for installation inside the circuit breaker or as modular devices for mounting on a TH35 rail, as in the case of releases, e.g. from the company's offer Schneider . The releases inside the circuit breaker are usually in the form of typical devices, dimensioned for specially prepared places in a dedicated device. They are usually installed in an uncomplicated manner - with a latch.

On the other hand, the method of triggering in the case of modular devices requires installation of the trip unit directly at the switch on its side, where the trigger has a trigger pin, and the switch

  • an opening through which the electromagnetically operated hurt. Thus, the circuit breaker is tripped automatically, mechanically.
