Each reciprocating engine is equipped with a timing. It is responsible for delivering loads to the cylinders and discharging exhaust gases to the exhaust ducts. This is one of the most complex systems present in internal combustion units. It therefore requires the use of the best spare parts in the event of any fault. If you need a complete timing belt or just an element, you will find the right solution in this category.

Construction and principle of operation of the valve timing

The basic components of the timing are valves, tappets, shafts, gears and timing drive. The energy needed to perform the work of the system comes from the crankshaft. It is transmitted by a pulley and a belt to gears that are coupled to the shafts. The timing uses rotary motion and controls the lift of the valves with the help of cams. When they are lifted, a mixture of air and fuel or air may enter the combustion chamber. Exhaust valves, on the other hand, allow the release of gases resulting from the ignition of the mixture. Correctly adjusted timing helps to obtain the correct internal pressure and cylinder tightness. This is important when making the individual strokes of the piston and properly filling the cylinders.

Types of currently used timing gears

Currently, overhead valve technology is used in both spark ignition and compression ignition engines. Timing can, however, be divided into 3 categories: OHC, OHV and DOHC. The first of the systems uses a roller located in the head. The timing is belt driven and has no additional components such as, for example, tappets. It can be in a system with one and two rollers. The OHV system has a more complicated structure that requires the use of many auxiliary parts, which is why it is not currently used on a large scale. Its work uses a shaft located in the unit block that transmits energy through the pusher and rod. Springs are also involved in the operation of the valves.

The last of the systems is DOHC, which is based on the presence of two rollers. Timing operating with them is characterized by the presence of more valves. This allows the engine to achieve a higher compression ratio, have improved flows, and have better performance. Some models of the concept cars use a timing drive with compressors, which allow precise control of valve lift without camshafts.

How often to change the timing?

Due to the complexity of the system and the difficult conditions in which it must work, individual elements last shorter than other moving parts of the engine, hence timing replacement is more frequent. It is recommended that service work is not limited to putting on a new belt. Periodically check the wear progress and check that it is not contaminated with oil or coolant. Timing belt replacement should take place every 5 years or more. The interval depends on the condition of the components, the way the vehicle is used and the quality of the parts purchased. Therefore, on our auction portal, renowned manufacturers list only the highest-quality components that guarantee longer and more efficient operation of the components.

How to set the timing?

First of all, it should be noted that this is an operation that requires extraordinary accuracy. In simple terms, it is about adjusting all the markers on the belt, camshaft and flywheel to be fully synchronized. Some models require the use of specialized equipment to lock the timing components. Any deviation from the norms, even in the form of millimeter values, may result in timing misalignment and deterioration of the unit's operation. We recommend that you rotate the shaft a few times before starting the engine to check that the settings are correct.
