Power equipment

Widely understood electrical equipment, wires, cables and devices can be divided into three-phase (power) and single-phase. Although in older houses and apartments you can still find a single-phase installation, nowadays consumers of electricity are usually supplied with three-phase power.

Power equipment - three phase power supply and applications

The motor equipment is designed for three-phase power supply, i.e. five-wire power supply. A three-phase cable consists of 5 wires - the phase wires L1, L2 and L3 are usually all black, brown or grey (or different for each phase), the neutral wire N is blue and the protective wire PE is green-yellow. Typical three-phase sockets or power plugs allow the connection of three phase wires, a neutral wire and a protective wire, and other three-phase devices and apparatus are powered in a similar way.

Why three-phase current?

Most electricity connections are three-phase. Even though the customer can opt for a single-phase power supply, this is rarely the case nowadays due to the high load on the installation - even in a one-room flat, due to the presence of an electric cooker (gas is rarely supplied to multi-family houses for gas cookers), washing machine, dishwasher, TV set, computer, electric kettle, etc., the connection power of 5-6 kW offered on average by the energy distributor in the case of a single-phase installation may prove to be insufficient. It has to be underlined that we are talking here about new buildings and installations. In older buildings, a single phase installation is still the standard.

Popular applications for power accessories

Three-phase power is mainly used in the home because of the high power requirements of modern households, not because of the need for power accessories. Of course in single-family houses the fact of having power installation is used and one or two power sockets are mounted in the garage or utility room for possible use, but this is not absolutely necessary. Similarly, three-phase electric cookers can almost always be powered from a single-phase system, since there is usually a factory separation between a single-phase heating element and a single-phase oven.

Workshops and industrial plants, on the other hand, are places where you can't do without a three-phase power supply. Apart from the power required, many devices require a three-phase power supply in the sense that the phase shift characteristic of three-phase current is necessary for their proper operation. Here, the three-phase system cannot be replaced by three single phases.

The advantages of power installation in residential buildings are sometimes mentioned as possible division of the electrical system into three independent networks within the building, which is technically feasible, but causes limitations in the use of electrical equipment. It is technically feasible, however it causes limitations in the use of electrical devices. When deciding on such action one should also take care of even loading of each phase.

Three-phase electrical equipment - examples

As with single-phase circuits, three-phase sockets and compatible plugs are the most commonly used fittings in a power installation. Sockets are usually made as surface mounted and sealed, with a high degree of protection IP (at least 44), plugs are usually well protected against the ingress of water and dust and solid objects at the point of insertion of the power cord. Compatible sockets and plugs form a connector characterized by high tightness.

On the market there are also power sockets designed for panel mounting - they are usually equipped with industrial switchgears, they are also an integral part of power supply sets and building switchgears. Power sockets are also a part of three-phase distributors designed for temporary use - biphones, tees, cross-connectors and others, as well as adapters and reducers.
