Steel cables

Steel cables are used wherever flexible mounting elements are required. These elements are made of stranded steel wires and are therefore characterised by high strength. This type of rope is usually covered with zinc, which provides protection against corrosion. They are used for fastening, carrying, construction, belaying, tying or even decorating.

Wire rope construction

The construction of wire ropes is based on a scheme. Such elements consist of a core and a braid - that is, different types of wire. The core can be made of organic fibers, plastic or steel. When made of steel, wire ropes provide more strength, but they are also much more rigid.

The cables, which are the suspension cables, have a high load-bearing capacity and are protected against stretching. At the same time, they retain considerable flexibility, allowing them to be knotted, for example. Therefore, they are used in many situations, where the connection must be flexible and strong at the same time. They are used both in workshop works, during repairs, building constructions, arranging allotments or transporting products. Depending on the thickness of the ropes, they can also be used in fishing, transport or heavy industry.

Wire ropes - various coverings

Due to the fact that wire ropes are often used outdoors, they need to feature increased weather resistance. When it comes to steel ropes, galvanizing provides a layer of protection against corrosion. Therefore, such a component can be exposed to both UV radiation and rain. You'll also find cables with acid-resistant coatings, but zinc-plated cables are by far the most popular in this category.

If the rope is to be used to secure an element (e.g. during transport), plastic coated ropes are used. In such case they are much safer for the object being secured - soft plastic protects against scratches. Regardless of the covering of the rope (galvanized or plastic), it will be characterized by high strength and lifting capacity.

Wire ropes - key parameters

The parameters of wire ropes best reflect the most important characteristics of this type of element. During the selection of ropes, we analyze, among other things, the breaking strength. This value refers to the force needed to break the rope. It depends on the cross-section, construction, applied strands, etc. It depends on the cross-sectional area, construction, strands used, etc. When analyzing this element, it should be kept in mind that rope tests are carried out in laboratory conditions, so it is always advisable to buy a rope with some reserve of strength.

Elasticity, on the other hand, is a value calculated on the basis of the ratio of the rope's cross-sectional area to the wires used - the higher the value, the greater the rope's twisting and binding capabilities. When choosing the rope, it is important to look at its weave. For a 1x7 strand, for example, you are dealing with an element of high stiffness and tensile strength. On the other hand, a 6x7 or 6x19 strand is much more flexible.

Wire rope accessories

Wire ropes could not be used as mounting elements without numerous accessories. Galvanized and coated wire rope accessories should be matched to the type of strand and cross section.

Rope clamps are utilized to get a solid hold on the rope. After making a loop at the end, such a clamp should be tightened with e.g. a spanner or a screwdriver. Shackles are used to connect the rope to another item (e.g. during transport). There are also a variety of ratchets, hooks, carabiners, pulleys, thimbles, and turnbuckles used for steel cables. Ropes may also be sold in sets, e.g. as ready-made slings.

When using wire ropes, scissors are also a very useful tool for cutting such elements.
