Since the lever-type construction of pliers is very versatile in terms of possible applications, special tools have been developed which are intended either for a particular professional group or for a small range of specific operations.
When it comes to electrical installation there are a number of specialised tools which come in handy. Multifunction pliers for electrical installations, for example, can be used for cutting, stripping and handling multi-conductor wires and cables. They can also be used to crimp connectors and remove hole plugs from electrical boxes. This group of tools includes pliers for stripping the outer insulation of 2- or 3-conductor flat or round cables used in electrical installations in buildings. An interesting proposition in this group of specialised pliers are tools for replacing halogens and for cutting holes for pipes or cables in thin plastic sheaths.
Telecommunications and electronics pliers are a separate group of specialised tools. The largest family of these is made up of different types of electronics pliers, which are small in size and very exact in design. Apart from these, there are pliers for removing the sheaths of optical fibres, for cutting multi-conductor cables used in computers and presses for micro connectors and fixing telephone cable connectors.

Pliers for hard materials and brittle materials are a specialist subgroup of gripping pliers. They include pliers for breaking ceramic tiles and pliers for working glass, especially for breaking glass into shapes.
Soft material pliers are a small group of tools. Their main members are pliers for making holes in natural or artificial leather and similar materials and for fixing material upholstery.
