Socket wrenches

Socket wrenches are a separate group of hand wrenches included in the large family of open-end wrenches. These tools are used for tightening or loosening bolted connections with a large range of dimensions and strengths. They are used for hexagon head bolts and hexagon nuts.

Socket wrench design

Socket wrenches consist of 2 working parts, namely 2 sockets and a handle. The sockets have three basic designs: L-bend, straight and hinged. Straight wrenches are supplied with a separate knob in the form of a metal rod, which is inserted into the drive holes of these tools. The internal profile of the sockets is either hexagonal or 12-angular. Both profiles can be modified - appropriately rounded, to increase the durability of the wrench and the nut and bolt head. Socket wrenches are manufactured from chrome-molybdenum steel or high-alloy steel. Their manufacturing standards are defined by UNE 16586 and ISO 2236, among others. Their metric dimension range is 5-50 mm. These tools are mostly finished in satin, chromium-plated and polished, or nickel-plated, chromium-plated and well-polished. This makes them well protected against corrosion and pleasant to the hand. A separate type of socket wrenches are cross-head wrenches. They are a cross-shaped combination of two double-sided open-end wrenches with a bar body. They are mainly used for assembly/disassembly of wheels in cars.

Types of socket wrenches

Socket wrenches are available in two basic 2-way versions: straight and pipe (L). On the basis of the way the sockets are mounted, a distinction is made between fixed and hinged socket wrenches, i.e. sockets that are hinged to the handle with a bolt.

Main characteristics of socket wrenches

The technical characteristics of socket wrenches are: size (socket inner diameter, mm or inch), socket outer diameter (mm), total length (mm) and total weight (g).

Applications for socket wrenches

Socket wrenches are mainly used in mechanical service: for vehicles, including automobiles, machinery, etc. They are manufactured by e.g. Bahco, Beta, Facom, Gedore, Hazet, Proxxon, Snap-on, Stanley, Stahlwille etc.
