Sealing materials

In the electrical industry, insulation materials for cables and wires have a dual function. On the one hand, they provide a permanent electrical connection, on the other hand, they guarantee the safety of both people in the immediate vicinity of the connection and property. Poor insulation of joints can be a source of electric leakage and electric shocks as well as of fires.

Sealing materials used in power engineering and electrical installations

Electrical seals are usually in the form of tapes, sleeves, glands, couplings, connectors and similar elements made of materials that are dielectric. Such solutions, although they guarantee good insulation, are not permanent, that is why they are used wherever further interference in the system is foreseen (e.g. extension, changing the place of introducing a wire or cable, the necessity of changing the network or installation layout, etc.).

Sometimes in electrotechnics and quite often in automatics and electronics permanent sealing is used by means of sealing compounds. It is especially justified with delicate connections of electronic components. In this case, flooding with mass does not affect the safety of human and material (control and electronic circuits are usually powered with very low voltage, which does not harm humans and does not cause fires), but provides proper connections and conduction of currents. In strong current circuits ground is used less often - prevailing connections, which are relatively easy to remove if necessary.

Insulating materials for cables - tape, heat shrinkable sleeve, gland and sealing compound

Low-voltage cables used in electrical installation are often subject to splices due to their function. Every electrical installer uses insulating tape - the easiest to use, effective seal for an electrical connection. The most commonly used are vinyl insulating tapes in different colors, which electricians try to use according to the industry-specific meaning of each color. So, for example, the ends of phase wires wrap with brown or black tape, neutral wires - blue, and protective PE - green-yellow. Although this is not a requirement, it is a practice recommended by professionals.

Another type of sealant is a material for insulating cables in the form of heat shrinkable sleeves. They have the form of short sleeves made of heat-shrinkable film. They are applied to the protected section of the connection and by applying heat (e.g. with a hairdryer), they are shrunk, thus forming a connection made of plastic that adheres very well to the sealed place.

Cable entries to electrical cabinets or appliance casings are usually secured with glands, i.e. elements usually made of plastic, which protect the cable against damage due to excessive bending or abrasion by sharp metal edges of the opening.

Another solution are insulation materials in the form of sealing compounds. In electrical engineering they are most often used in special conditions - in rooms with increased humidity, exposed to dust or chemical substances penetration, e.g. to a junction box. This kind of sealing is very precise and it is their important advantage, unfortunately making sealing with the use of sealing compounds is quite time consuming and relatively expensive, that is why they are usually not used in normal working conditions of an installation.

Cable insulation materials - sockets, glands and bushings

As with the cables laid as standard under the plaster on the walls of buildings, cables laid in the ground also need to be insulated. Most often, they are laid directly or in cable ducts, in the manner provided for by the regulations in force, which indicate, among other things, the necessity to dig a trench, lay a sand bed and mark the cable with blue foil, and then bury the trench. In places where cables are connected to each other or entered into connectors, switchboards, etc., it is necessary to take care of proper protection of the connections by means of cable muffs and cable glands, respectively. These elements have not only a connecting function, preventing electrical disconnection, but also a protective function - the leakage of current to earth is an obvious loss, as well as the danger of electric shock. Even more risky is inadequate insulation of above-ground connections of the cable with other network elements.

In addition to the standard cable joints and cable glands, it is sometimes advisable to make a permanent connection using specially designed insulating compounds using the pouring or filling method.
