Remote controls and LED drivers

Controlling the LED lighting is not complicated, but for this you need to obtain a suitable driver or a remote control. Most often drivers and remotes are used for LED strips, however, you can also control light bulbs and LED lamps. Drivers are devices that are plugged in between the lamp and the power supply.

It is worth knowing that in the case of single-color lamps or strips the controller only allows you to change the light intensity.

Much greater possibilities of light control are possible in the case of RGB lamps and light strips. Thanks to drivers or remote controls, you can control not only the brightness of the light, but also the color temperature of the light. In addition, the drivers allow for various types of lighting effects, alternating different colors and flickering lights. RGB LED drivers allow you to adjust the color temperature of light to the colors of the illuminated interior. In rooms painted in warm colors, warm (3000K) or neutral (4000K) light will work well, while in the case of gray or white walls, cold light (6000-6500K) can be used, which perfectly harmonizes with the cool colors of the surroundings. There is also a possibility to choose a lighting program, such as fading, flickering or abrupt changes of light colors.

How to choose LED remotes?

LED remote controls allow you to remotely control the lights from anywhere in the room. Even the simplest of them allow you to control the on and off of lights, as well as determine the strength of light and its color. The operating mechanism of the pilots is based on the use of infrared (IR) or radio waves (RF). Infrared remote controls are easy to use, have several buttons and allow you to choose one of several colors or lighting programs. However, the remote control must be directed at the infrared sensor of the controller for it to work.

In turn, radio remote controls work through walls and do not have to be directed at controller's detectors. They can be in the form of an ordinary remote control or a panel with a touchpad that allows you to mix colors and get their different shades. Radio models also allow for simultaneous control of several lighting zones, managed by several independent radio controllers. Therefore, such a remote control can handle single-color lights, RGB LED lights, and other types of lighting, e.g. fiber optic light curtain or star sky.

What to look for when choosing LED drivers?

When choosing an LED driver, you should define your needs and requirements. If only one light color is needed, the controller is required to turn on and off and its strength. RGB LED lights drivers offer much more possibilities.

An important selection criterion is also the way the lights are controlled. Drivers can be directed by infrared (IR) or radio waves (RF). Infrared controllers are easy to use and are cheap. They are usually offered with a dedicated remote control.

Radio driven drivers offer much more possibilities. Radio waves penetrate the walls, so they can be hidden in a housing, e.g. in a suspended ceiling or in a wall, and the control does not require pointing the remote control at the sensor.

An interesting solution is to connect sensors to the LED driver that react to movement or opening or closing the door. Such a device will be indicated in the lighting of wardrobes, wardrobes or lockers. When connected to motion or presence sensors, it allows you to control lighting in corridors, stairs or offices.

If the possibilities of traditional LED remotes do not seem to be big enough, you can buy LED drivers that can be connected to smart home systems, such as SUPLA. Thanks to this, it is possible to control the lights using an application for a smartphone or tablet or via a computer connected to the Internet. With their use, you can do the same as with ordinary remote controls, and also program the behavior patterns of lights in such a way that, for example, they imitate the presence of household members in the building - after connecting to twilight sensors, the lighting will turn on when it reaches dusk and turn it off at dawn.
