Relays

In carrying out its basic on-off function, the relay fulfills two tasks. Firstly, it separates the control and switching section in a galvanic way (i.e. preventing the flow of current), and secondly, it allows switching loads with high power and high voltage and / or current with low energy consumption (low voltage, low current), even at low electrical signals.

Electromagnetic and semiconductor relays

The relays can be divided into electromagnetic and semiconductor (SSR) relays, and in both cases their operation is based on switching the load circuit controlled by a voltage signal. Compared to electromagnetic relays, semiconductor devices have many advantages, which include mainly:

  1. no moving parts, which translates into silent operation,
  2. no electric arc and high inrush current capability,
  3. high durability and reliability,
  4. no electromagnetic interference,
  5. high speed of operation,
  6. low power needed to drive the relay.

On the other hand, relays electromagnetic, unlike semiconductor ones, are characterized by a negligible voltage drop, zero leakage current and high resistance to overvoltage.

Electromagnetic relays

In an electromagnetic relay, when an input voltage is applied to the coil, the electromagnet moves the armature and switches the contacts. The voltage decay results in the return spring pushing the contacts away from each other, opening the contact and disconnecting the load circuit. Electromagnetic relays are equipped with a normally open, normally closed and changeover contact.

Solid state relays

Solid-state relays use an optocoupler to separate the input and output circuits, which converts electrical signals into optical ones, passing them through galvanic isolation between the input and output sections. The optoelectronic system also controls the power circuit, and as a result, after applying voltage to the input, the contacts switch. Since SSRs have no moving parts, their switching elements are thyristors, triacs or transistors.

Interface solid state relays, miniature and industrial

The division of semiconductor relays depends on the adopted criterion - for example, you can take into account the power supply and distinguish three-phase relays and single-phase relays, or control and distinguish relays controlled by DC or AC voltage. Another form of division is functionality - for example, interface relays have the form of modular devices designed for mounting on a TH35 rail and are used to adjust different voltage signal levels, for example in building automation. Miniature relays used to amplify the signal or transfer a greater load may be an element of electronic devices, and special industrial relays are designed to work in traction apparatus in railway or tram networks.

Programmable relays or PLCs?

Instead of programmable solid-state relays, PLCs are also used in automation systems. Although the same effect can be achieved with both devices, the relays are used where a small number of functions and input and output expansions are sufficient, as well as not very extensive communication. More complex systems require the use of more expensive and technologically advanced PLCs.

Relays and contactors - low current signal vs. high currents

Although the contactor and the relay belong to the same group of switching devices, the contactor switches the high-current main circuits and the relay switches the auxiliary circuits.

A contactor is used to switch motors, heaters and transformers on and off, while the relay transmits the signal to the devices that monitor the operation of high-current systems. It is worth knowing that the range of electrical devices also includes hybrids - relay contactors and contactor relays.
