Combiners

Combine's pliers are the most common type of pliers used mainly for gripping small parts and cutting (mainly wire). It is commonly used in industry, construction, plumbing, crafts and also in households.

Construction of combination pliers

Combination pliers have a lever construction and consist of two handles and two jaws. In their working part, they are distinguished by: (1) frontal, shallow fluted flat jaws, (2) deeply fluted ellipsoidal jaws, and (3) side blades designed for cutting. The flat jaws can be used for gripping, pressing or bending workpieces such as sheet metal, wire, cables, etc. The corrugated semi-elliptical jaws, on the other hand, are used for gripping round or polygonal parts such as screw or bolt heads. The blades can be used to cut thin plastic parts, cut steel or copper wires and even disassemble nails etc. Some versions of pliers additionally have a press for bending cable ends or jaws for tightening steel cables. In some versions of these tools, the front flat jaws are tapered to make gripping wire or wire rope easier.

The handles of combination pliers come in different designs. The basic ones are steel handles, homogeneous in material with jaws. In order to make gripping pliers easier, different plastic caps are mounted on steel handles: made of PVC, 2-component, insulated handles complying with VDE standards.

Combination pliers are made of chrome-vanadium or carbon steel by drop forging, heat treatment and machining. Their fluted grip surfaces and cutting edges are induction hardened (to a maximum of 64 HRC for industrial applications). Combination pliers usually have an oxidized (blackened) or chrome-plated coating.

Types of combination pliers

Pliers can be classified into non-insulated standard pliers and insulated pliers (for electricians) on the basis of their intended use for electrical work. Among these tools, we can also distinguish pliers with conically tapered flat jaw faces and with the handle angled away from the jaws at an angle close to 90°.

Main technical parameters of combination pliers

The technical parameters, which characterize the pliers, are: overall length (mm), ability to cut wires of different hardness and multi-lead cables (mm2), length and height of jaws (mm), weight (g).

Applications for pliers

Combination pliers are used in a wide range of applications. They are used in industry, in the maintenance departments of all production plants, in construction, installation and craft trades, in service and mechanical workshops. They are manufactured by e.g. Bahco, Beta, Facom, Gedore, Hazet, Knipex, Proxxon, NWS, Snap-on, Stanley, Stahlwille, Wiha etc.
