Limit switches

Limit switches, or limit switches, are sensor devices that enable switching in electrical circuits as a result of changing the position of the object. It is a common element in industrial automation systems as well as in simple building automation systems.

The limit switches are characterized by small dimensions, easy assembly and a versatile choice in terms of the operating current and the design of the limit switch lever. This allows for the optimal selection of the limit switch for a given device. The length adjustment itself is quite a convenience.

The principle of operation of each limit switch is based on the electromechanical switching of the movable contact position. It occurs as a result of a physical contact of an external object with the actuator, which exerts pressure on the switch's limit contact lever. Please note that the switching threshold is adjustable. When the actuator physically connected to the limit switch is rotated or moved, the position of the electric contacts changes. Due to the fact that the limit switches are characterized by one stable position, depending on their design, the contacts in the stable state may be open or closed. Importantly, this type of devices the possibility of using in difficult conditions , therefore their application is versatile. The limit switches are characterized by a long service life and a consistently high level of precision during switching, or the possibility of switching high-power electrical loads. No wonder that in many systems, limit switches are one of the main components. Modern switches can also be used where there is a risk of explosion. They have the required approvals and certificates, an appropriate degree of protection and silver-plated contacts. What is certain is that when switches are used connecting or disconnecting motors will not cause any problems. It is enough to carefully look at the options that are available to choose from to adapt specific devices accordingly.

Ease of monitoring the operation of limit switches and the ability to switch high currents are other advantages of these components. This is due to the insulated sets of contacts and the fact that it is possible to open normally closed contacts directly. Additionally, the limit switches are resistant to electromagnetic disturbances.

Limit switches: construction

Precise control of the position of objects on the conveyor belt , performed by the limit switches, results directly from the way these devices are constructed. Some models provide, for example, power / no power indication, limitation of the setting range and movement, or the ability to transmit information about the presence of any items, along with their counting. The limit switches belong to the so-called road switches that cause effective opening, ensuring that all main contacts of the switch remain open when the manipulator, i.e. the switch drive, remains open and the moving, driving part of the machine reaches its end position.

The head plays a key role in the standard limit switches. The head can be mounted in one of four directions in the switch with a lever and with a roller. There is a built-in switch inside each housing. There is also a lever setting safety and a ring that protects against rotation in the wrong direction. The limit switch covers can be easily removed.

The limit switches available on the market differ mainly in the type of leverage. It can be: with adjustable length and with a roller, short with a roller, angular with rollers, bar with adjustable length. In addition, there are also limit switches with a stop lever and side switches with a roller. The levers can also be spring loaded. Therefore, individual devices should be selected in this respect. Then they will also work optimally and will certainly prove to be reliable in a specific system.
