Industrial plugs

The term industrial plugs covers a group of various types of connectors. Their design allows them to be used in very difficult working conditions. They are intended for various types of applications, where the most important feature is high strength and durability of connections. The plastic used for their production and the special construction ensure that they have specific properties, significantly increasing the safety of their use. High mechanical strength allows for peaceful and long-term operation, regardless of whether they are single-phase or three-phase industrial plugs.

Three-phase industrial plugs

Industrial plugs are a common connecting element found in a wide variety of installations. They allow to power a large group of industrial devices and machines in construction, agriculture, companies and workshops. They sometimes have a power indicator . They are used to connect with elements of switchboards, desks and mounted on all kinds of extension cords. Their workplace may be difficult environmental conditions and areas exposed to mechanical damage. They are perfect for construction sites, regardless of weather conditions, sawmills and in cement plants to power devices working outside the facilities.

The most common group of power connectors are three-phase industrial plugs adapted to work with rated currents of 16A and 32A. Electric equipment adapted to the loads of 64A or 128A is less common. A large proportion of these industrial connections are protected against the ingress of foreign substances. IP44 tightness classes provide basic protection and splash-proof, and IP67 waterproof for temporary immersion in water. This makes it possible to use them for outdoor events as connectors for lighting, powering generators or high-power blowers and fans.

Construction of industrial plugs

Regardless of the values ​​of currents flowing in electrical installations, the plastic they are made of has very good insulating properties and is resistant to high temperatures. Rubber used to seal the housings allows for high resistance of plugs to dirt and seals the connections between them and the mating plug-in sockets. Industrial plugs are manufactured as independent connectors in a straight plug or angled receiver plug. This protects the cabling against damage by reducing the distance between the cable and the socket mounted on the wall, machine or switchboard. There is also a type of receiver plug that is mounted on devices, machines or walls in industrial facilities and various types of farm buildings. Their installation allows you to connect the power to the receiver directly from the extension cord. So we eliminate the intermediate element in the form of an additional socket. Most of the sockets and plugs have a cover on which a sealing rubber is seated. Depending on the type, the plugs have 2 to 5 connection pins. The most common are:

  1. 5-pin industrial plugs with one neutral L pin and one PE protective pin. And also with three poles, adapted to be supplied with voltage of 400V.
  2. 4-pin plugs are used in older systems but are also functional today. Three poles transmit the power, and one additional pole is responsible for protection (PEN).
  3. 3-pin industrial plugs have one PE protective pole, one neutral N and one L power pole. They are used to supply single-phase devices with 220V voltage.

Connecting a single phase network

Industrial plugs are also typical single-phase connectors for 220V network sockets. In the case of industrial applications, they are made of more resistant polyamide materials, such as elamide . It is a modified thermoplastic material that is resistant to extreme temperatures. It has much greater non-flammable properties and is often reinforced with glass fiber. Elamid is often used in products that require higher security. Apart from this group, there are also bipolar plugs, male plugs made of resistant rubber used to connect portable devices. They are used in sound equipment, mobile multimedia equipment or workshop tools. Some of them have a power indicator to facilitate remote control and verification of the correct power supply of the installation.
