Crimping pliers for cable ends

Nowadays, various types of terminations, sleeves and connectors, which are made of metals or their alloys that conduct electricity very well, are used to terminate wires. They are standardized by manufacturers and thus adapted to the diameters of wires and types of connections used in installations and electrical systems and devices. The most popular are uninsulated and insulated slip-on terminals, thin-wall sleeves, uninsulated and insulated terminals, uninsulated angle and slip-on terminals, Twin sleeve terminals for attaching two flexible conductors, F-type connectors for TV-satellite cables, D-Sub connectors; HD 20; HDE, coaxial connectors RG 58, 59, 62, 71, 223, round cable lugs, coaxial and telephone connectors for cars RG 58, 174, 188, 316, modular connectors, Western-type telephone plugs, unshielded Molex-type and shielded Stewart-type plugs, special photovoltaic connectors: Helios H4 (Amphenol), round (HTS + Harting), Huber + Suhner type, ABS plugs, MC 3 (Multi-Contact), MC 4 (Multi-Contact), Hirschmann type, Tyco, gesis® solar PST 40 (Wieland). The termination of cables with the above mentioned terminations consists in their pressing on stripped wires with the use of various types of pliers equipped with special crimping mechanisms or dies also called presses.

Types of crimping pliers and their principle of operation

Pliers for crimping cable ends have a lever construction and differ in the design of their working part. Among these we can distinguish between crimping tools with (a) a special 4- or 6-segment crimp, (b) a 2-sided V-segment press, (c) one or more fixed presses (dies) for different sizes and types of conductor endings or (d) interchangeable dies with several such presses. Accordingly, this type of pliers performs the crimping operation of the wire ends in two ways: (1) by means of a 4- or 6-way crimping mechanism (pliers a and b) or (2) using 2-way presses or dies (pliers c and d). The first type of pliers are only used for Twin ring terminals and cable shoes as per DIN 46228 (part 1 + 4) with a cross section up to 16 mm2 . One construction variation of these tools is the pliers with rotating (360°) press. With the second type of pliers, we can work on unsoldered conductors and most of the used cable lugs. All that is needed for this is the appropriate dies which are mounted in these tools. In order to make it easier to work on a large number of conductors and to reduce the number of tools used to only one, pliers with interchangeable dies have been developed.

For the sake of completeness, very special designs of wire crimping pliers are produced for industrial use. They are calibrated and have a precise crimping force adjustment which makes it possible to adapt the force to the connector in question and thus guarantee the correct crimping. They are available in versions with or without a digital display. Such pliers are designed for turned joints used in industry, e.g. industrial automatics used in aviation, railways, robotics etc. The type of crimping done by these pliers is also specific. They bend in four points in two planes.

End crimping pliers are made from different materials: from chrome vanadium steel and profiled hard sheet steel and also from plastic (automatic pliers). Their handles are also made of different plastics. They are either 1- or 2-component.

Combination pliers for crimping cable ends

In order to be able to work on the most common cables in a comprehensive manner, crimping pliers have been developed with different types of fixed press sockets as well as profiled blades for stripping and cutting wires. There are many versions of these tools available on the market with different number of mentioned functionalities.

Main parameters of wire crimping pliers

The main characteristics of wire crimping pliers are: overall length (mm), size and type of cable lugs or cross-section of the wires to be crimped (mm2, AWG) and weight (g).

Applications for cable crimping pliers

Cable crimping pliers are specialist tools for working with electric and electronic cables. They are intended for electricians, electricians, electronics technicians, as well as service technicians repairing and servicing electronic equipment (TV, radio, telephone), electrical equipment, aircraft, machines and vehicles, etc. They are manufactured by Knipex, Rennsteig, Wiha etc.
