Shields are used to protect overhead lines. They are used e.g. around bird breeding areas or near trees and forests. They protect cables by providing an extra layer of insulation or extra distance. Their installation is intended to minimise the risk of short circuits and other damage to power cables. Electrical shields are characterized by high resistance to UV radiation. Bird protection for power lines
Overhead power lines are set up for severe weather conditions. They must operate properly whether it is snowing or raining or there is a very high air temperature. Harsh conditions also include wind, leading to very strong vibrations.
The construction of power lines is designed to cope with such weather conditions. This applies both to the support structures (i.e. poles), insulators, fixing elements (hooks, clamps, slings, couplings, collars) and finally the conductors themselves. Medium and high voltage lines should be adapted to the operating conditions in a particular location. In particularly demanding locations, additional protection must be used. This will be the case, for example, when lines are located in close proximity to nesting areas.
The presence of birds and other small animals on high-voltage lines can cause interference and also lead to short circuits. For this reason, special measures are often taken to protect installations against birds.
It is important to note that bird guards do not only protect lines against damage. Such solutions also have ecological advantages, as they protect the lives of birds and small animals.
Bird guards provide an insulating layer. They are mounted e.g. on transformer terminals, standing insulators, transformers, motors or pole tops. These types of elements are characterised by simple assembly - usually clamps are enough for that. Electrical bird guards can also be mounted directly on cables - both bare and insulated.

Electrical guards against tree branches
However, not only birds can be dangerous to power lines. Very often the specific nature of a particular installation requires the line to be run in close proximity to trees. In such a situation, branches moved by the wind can lead to the appearance of various interference or short circuits. This is particularly important when the branches appear close to unprotected elements.
In this situation, various types of branch protection clips are used. They stabilize the cables and keep their distance. Their very big advantage is the ease of installation. To do this, it is enough to slip the clip over the cable. What's more - you can even do it on live wires using an insulating rod. These types of clips are made of plastic with high resistance to weathering and sunlight. Protection clips are also used in front of poles with arcing protection, which are intended to protect the installation against the effects of lightning.
Various vibration dampers are also a specific form of products in this category. These are designed to provide greater protection for power cables - in this case against wind. Gusts of wind cause so-called aeolian vibrations, which have a negative effect on the durability of the installation. Vibration dampers are installed at the two ends of the span at the power poles.
