Contact inserts for industrial connectors

Contact inserts of industrial connectors are their essential elements responsible for the electrical connection. In connector systems, they are interchangeable so that within one housing (plugs and sockets) you can easily create various types of connections. In this way, both the plugs and the housings can be used many times, depending on the intended use and working conditions.

Contact inserts - the basic element of industrial connectors

Wherever the connection between the receiver and the power source should be easily established, retained and disconnected, industrial connectors are used. They represent a wide range of products used for the implementation of electrical connections, both signal and power. The large variety of connectors translates directly into the variety of compatible contact inserts.

The role of contact inserts in industrial connectors

Measuring junctions with contact inserts are technically advanced electromechanical elements. They can transmit both power supply and low-current signals, or both components simultaneously. The most common areas of use for industrial connectors are:

  1. mechanical engineering industry,
  2. automotive industry,
  3. agricultural industry,
  4. chemical industry
  5. electronics,
  6. telecommunications
  7. aviation industry
  8. space exploration areas.

Connectors are used in particular in places where cables supply power or control from the outside to the inside of the device, and output measurement signals from it.

Due to the fact that the connectors are most often located outside the device, they are exposed to connection in harsh environmental conditions. For this reason, they must have appropriate tightness, mechanical durability and chemical resistance, as well as good quality contact inserts, which are responsible in the joint for creating and maintaining the electrical connection.

Construction of a connector on the example of a rectangular connector

The wide range of industrial connectors includes circular and rectangular industrial connectors. Taking into account the functional elements, it can be assumed that the circular connector is constructed in the same way as the rectangular connector. The example Revos coupling from Wieland Elecric is representative of the entire group of classic rectangular industrial couplings. Its components are:

  1. cable gland to ensure a seal between the cable and the electrical connection inside the housing,
  2. plug housing (connector outer housing, cable entry point),
  3. connector inserts with contacts:
    1. male insert and male contacts,
    2. female insert and female contacts,
  4. socket housing.

Both male and female inserts use different types of terminals: screw, solder, self-locking, crimp contacts , cast or stamped. In turn, the socket housing can be provided with various types of connections - open section mounted to the machine and closed section mounted to the machine with side or bottom entry.

The process of composing a connector from system components

Both circular and rectangular connectors are similarly composed of the same components mentioned above. The process should start with the selection of the appropriate cartridge, specifying its parameters:

  1. intensity,
  2. tension,
  3. type of contacts (in the case of multi-pin inserts, male contact is a pin, and female contact - a socket) and their number,
  4. type of conductor attachment.

When the insert is already selected, you should choose the appropriate plug and socket, which must be compatible with the insert, but also suitable for a given application (eg size match the device housing). The next step is to make electrical connections in the plug and socket. The connector prepared in this way is ready for testing, and then, if the test is successful, for use.
