Comb channels

comb cable trays are an element of electrical installations that facilitate and organize the wiring of devices as well as the distribution and protection of the installation. Often also called comb ducts, they are used as wire protection in many types of electric lines. They come in several variants, including full installation strips in the form of closed installation channels. And also as perforated comb trays in various shapes and types selected according to the intended use. They are used depending on the location, number of wires and thickness of the wiring harness or the method of attachment to the ground.

Comb channels - transparency of installation

In surface-mounted installations and all types of lines laid on the surface, as well as cabling of machines and devices on production lines, it is important to correctly and safely cabling. All places where the electric voltage is connected should be well protected by correct hiding the wiring on individual fragments. It is very important to protect cables against damage and unauthorized access. Depending on the required degree of protection of the installation against external factors and the final destination, closed, (full) installation channels or perforated comb channels are installed. In both variants, the trays and channels most often have cover strips protecting the cables against damage or falling out.

All types of cable protection can be installed both vertically and horizontally. The cables distributed inside can be attached with the use of additional accessories in the form of clamps and installation bands. Internal fasteners allow for smooth grouping of cables, depending on the needs.

Comb channels and installation channels - construction

The materials used to make the ducts are mostly hot-dip zinc coated metal. This ensures correct and long-term protection of cables and protects against corrosion during the operation of the installed installations. Perforated surfaces of all surfaces of the channel facilitate the assembly of individual elements and allow for any wiring of devices in a given installation.

Comb trays are most often made of damage-resistant and self-extinguishing PVC or, in newer technologies, more and more often of halogen-free materials. Safety conditions and cable protection is much greater when halogen-free materials are used. They do not release any toxic compounds in the event of a fire in the installation. They are most often used in public utility buildings and places requiring safe fire evacuation.

The comb trays can be divided into two main groups:

  • thin ribbed channels. They are used to organize and distribute cables with smaller cross-sections. This category of devices also includes comb flexible trays. They have perforated side walls with bent ends. This enables cable protection and flexible cable routing on various planes and surfaces. In addition to the perforation of the base, this element has a self-adhesive tape that enables quick attachment to the surface.

The sides of the combs are equipped with thickenings that allow you to properly hold the cables and access the installation without having to disassemble it. Most models have deliberate weakening of the side combs at two heights, which makes it easier to break them off if you need a larger cable entry.

Installation channels and comb channels have a wide range of sizes. The most common ones start from 16 millimeters to 100 millimeters in various variants of the height-to-width ratio of the profile.
