Coils for contactors

Contactor coils can be classified as basic electrical equipment. It is the main component in every contactor, which enables the component to function properly. Modular contactors are standard contactors enclosed in a modular housing.

This allows them to be easily mounted on a standard rail. The modular design and the basic parameters of the contactors allow them to be used in ventilation, air conditioning and lighting control systems. In addition, they can be used for heating in residential buildings and public buildings.

Contactor coils: principle of operation

The coils for contactors as their components are an important part. Therefore, when selecting a contactor, it is necessary to pay attention to basic parameters, such as whether the contactor is to be 1-phase or 3-phase. The amperage of 20, 25, 40 or 63 amperes should also be specified. It is important to support the contactor coil because if this is damaged then the module contactor can be damaged. This will be indicated by a humming noise from the contactor. Check that the coil is not depleted in this situation and that the correct control voltage is applied. If the contactor is buzzing, there may be dust or dirt in the enclosure.

Therefore, it is very important to determine where the contactor is to operate. Whether it is for ventilation, air conditioning, lighting control or heating control - then the choice will be much easier and accurate.

Usually contactors work in two categories:

  • AC1 corresponding to the switching of resistive circuits,

  • AC3 corresponding to switching of inductive circuits such as induction motors.

Once the category has been determined, the rated current or power must be specified. Contactors usually offer a range from 4 to 1500 A. The next step is to determine the coil control voltage.

Some of the most common include: 24 volts AC, 24 volts DC, and 230 volts AC.

However, there may also be voltages such as: 42 V AC/DC, 48 V AC/DC, 110 V AC/DC, or 400 V AC. It is also worth choosing auxiliary contacts for the contactors you have already selected.

Coils for contactors: coil support

Contactor coil support is used in various applications, such as on/off control. This is achieved by connecting a momentary push button in parallel with the contactor's auxiliary NO contact. When the momentary pushbutton is pressed, voltage is applied to the coil and all contactors start to conduct. The auxiliary NO contact of the contactor maintains the coil, and the system is switched off only when the momentary pushbutton is activated.

The principle of operation of contactors and relays is the same. The difference is that a relay is used to connect control and signalling circuits and a contactor is used to connect main circuits. Relays are therefore smaller in size than contactors because less current flows through them.

The coil, as part of the contactor, influences its proper operation. A contactor is an electrical switch whose contacts are in the open state. They are opened when another device or an electromagnet is energized. Contactors conduct electricity under all conditions. Not only when the circuit is working efficiently, but also when an overload occurs. Contactors can be used in: heaters, fans, pumps, sirens, lamps or motor circuits. A contactor consists of a coil, working contacts and auxiliary contacts. Among the auxiliary contacts are especially used front contacts, whose role is to provide information about the operation of a particular load. The front auxiliary contacts for contactors are mounted on the front of the contactor.

They are made of durable materials, responsible for the safety of use of the entire device within which they are placed. The coil, as one of the components, should be checked on an ongoing basis to prevent failure of the entire system.
