Cable glands and bushings

Cable glands and bushings are basic accessories for cabling. Their main purpose is to seal and protect cables. Cable glands are available in rubber and metal versions and bushings in rubber.

Cable Glands: Characteristics

Cable glands and grommets can be purchased from leading manufacturers, in the parameters of your choice. This ensures that they will be used exactly as anticipated. The sealing of cable penetrations through electrical appliance enclosures depends precisely on a component such as cable glands, which can also, due to their modern design, prevent the cable from twisting inside. Thus, they guarantee high resistance to breakage. By using a cable gland, you do not have to worry about the cable breaking. Glands available on the market have protection level IP68, which means that they are completely dustproof and resistant to water and moisture. Therefore, you can use them safely, even in extremely difficult conditions. Usually, glands work in a temperature range from - 40 degrees Celsius to + 100 degrees Celsius. They are easy to install, which is another advantage of them. Some glands are made of polyamide, which also makes them resistant to weather conditions. Practical glands are available with different types of threads. The dimensions of the glands enable them to be used with cables of various diameters and also allow for operation in a wide temperature range. Through the glands, it is possible to insert: conductors, cables, casing pipes, switchboards, boxes and many other enclosures, while maintaining an adequate degree of protection. Due to the construction of these components, there are 3 types:

  • screw threaded glands for wires and installation pipes,

  • membrane glands used for cables,

  • pin-type glands used for electric cables.

In threaded glands, sealing takes place by lateral swelling of the rubber ring, obtained by tightening the upper nut of the gland. This works very well for sealing cables, wires and tubes with a round cross section. Diaphragm sealing glands, on the other hand, are intended for sealing cable penetrations through the walls of boxes and enclosures in electrical equipment with the press-fit method. They are perfect for sealing cables with round cross section. Tenon glands are the largest, so they are ideal for sealing the entrances of power cables to casing pipes in the ground. These types of glands are not watertight, because their task is to protect the culverts and cable routes from siltation or waterlogging. For glands are prepared additional accessories, such as electrical plugs, so that the main components work reliably in all circumstances.

Cable grommets from reputable manufacturers allow cables to pass through walls and through electrical equipment housings. They are equipped with a rigid cable grommet which protects cables from mechanical damage. Cable gullies also provide optimal insulation and are water and gas tight. They allow different types of cables to be inserted into installation boxes. It does not matter whether it is a surface mounted or flush mounted box, control cabinet or switchboard. Cable ducts are usually used when there is no need to worry about difficult conditions. It is always advisable to choose a cable conduit according to the environmental conditions in which it is to be used. Therefore, if the cables have a larger diameter, it is necessary to pay more attention to the size of the grommets. Grommets are usually made of rubber, plastic or metal. These elements allow for efficient passage of cables through walls or housings in electrical equipment, and in addition, they guarantee the sealing of the cable, limiting the possibility of damage in case of excessive use of the indicated material. Therefore, they are suitable for places where cables are frequently bent.
