There are many different standards of connectors and connecting cables in the household electronics used today. Audio connectors are divided into analog and digital connectors. Video connectors are divided into several subgroups. It is worth getting acquainted with the general characteristics of individual types of connectors, and then choose the appropriate one for the intended use.

Audio, video connectors: characteristics

Audio and video connectors is a large group that can be divided into many subcategories. The analog audio connectors include: RCA, Jack plug, Speakon, XLR. Analog digital connectors include: S / PDIF, coaxial, optical, HDMI, USB.

RCA, cinch is the most popular audio / video connector with many applications. It is used for transmitting audio or video signals between devices such as: receiver, DVD player or TV set. This type of connection uses unbalanced signals and is susceptible to electromagnetic disturbances at longer lengths. They can be reduced by using high-class shielded coaxial cables and gold-plated plugs.

The Jack plug is designed to transmit an analog signal, usually audio. There are several types in this group, depending on the size, number of pins and application. Jack plugs are used in portable devices, musical instruments and headphones.

SpeakOn is a connector characterized by durability and speed of connection, thanks to the use of the QuickLock mounting system. Typically, SpeakOn is used in studio and stage systems to connect speakers and amplifiers.

XLR is a professional connector standard that is used in audio technology, for example, when connecting microphones. The main advantage of these connectors is to guarantee the lowest possible signal losses and interference. This is due to the optimally designed insulation and resistance to weather conditions and mechanical damage. The minimization of disturbances results from the use of symmetrical connections, showing durability in the event of electromagnetic disturbances. There are many varieties of XLR connectors on the market, with a different number of pins. The following connectors are available, among others: three -, four -, five - and seven-pin.

Among the digital models, S / PDIF, developed by SONY and Philips, stands out. It is used to transmit digital audio without the need for conversion. The S / PDIF connector can be used to transfer audio in three formats. This group includes coaxial connectors, terminated with RCA plugs, where the signal is sent by means of electrical impulses. It is used for connections of a shorter length. There are also optical models, resistant to electromagnetic interference, using optical fiber. In their case, light pulses are the carrier of information. They are mainly used for long-distance connections.

HDMI, in turn, is an interface that is used to simultaneously transmit digital, uncompressed audio and video. When using HDMI, you do not need a separate audio connector. The connection of audio / video equipment is possible through the use of technology such as, for example, the ARC audio return channel.

USB is a universal serial bus that quickly detects the type of hardware, configures it and, if necessary, installs the necessary drivers. USB can be used in: desktops, laptops, smartphones, tablets, TVs and many other devices.

Audio, video connectors: other devices

Among the audio / video connectors, other devices can also be distinguished, such as: adapter, microphone socket or sperka - here, of course, the model should also be selected for a specific application. Among the video connectors, we can also distinguish DVI, i.e. a connector with a cable for transmitting digital video and audio signals at a distance of up to 5 meters. This connector is used to connect digital devices such as: DVDs, LCD TVs, or computer video cards and monitors.
